Professor Denis J Protti BSc, MSc, FACMI

Widely considered an icon in the field of healthcare informatics, Professor Denis Protti was the founder of Canada's University of Victoria School of Health Information Science in 1981. Dr Protti continued his work to advance the field of healthcare informatics when he helped to found both COACH and AMIA. In 1989, he was one of the first non-Americans elected to be a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. He has written hundreds of publications and has given even more presentations around the world. He regularly advises health care organizations and government agencies in both Canada and abroad.

In his work as Deputy Head of the ICT for Health unit of the European Commission, Ilias Iakovidis is responsible for advancing the European Union's (EU) research strategy on eHealth and health ICT and for engendering ever growing levels of international cooperation in relation to that research. Since 1993, Dr Iakovidis has initiated and collaborated on a series of research and development projects pertaining to biomedical informatics and electronic health records in an effort to address the continuously evolving challenges facing clinicians and ICT providers. In 2001, the American College of Medical Informatics named Dr Iakovidis as a fellow of the college in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of medical informatics.

Kevin Dean is Managing Director for Public Sector Healthcare in Cisco's Internet Business Solution Group (IBSG), focusing on helping public sector customers to develop their strategies and implementation plans for "Connected Health" information management and technology. He has experience in numerous aspects of health IT strategy and execution. He and his team work with national & regional Governments around the world, as well as working with the European Commission and World Health Organisation. Kevin's team is also providing advice for ground-breaking projects such as the Health Academy, a joint WHO / Cisco initiative to provide health education to school children in developing nations. Kevin edited and introduced a collection of essays from leading health IT thinkers (Thought Leaders: "Connected Health" published December 2003), setting out ideas, lessons and opportunities for networked healthcare based on real experience. He also edited and contributed to the White Paper on the use of Grid Technology in healthcare, jointly published with the Healthgrid Association, in 2004.

Ton van den Hoven is a veteran in the Heathcare IT industry, with significant experience in Radiology Informatics solutions. After having served as a senior manager with Cemax-Icon and Kodak, Mr van den Hoven joined Stentor Inc, a California-based Medical Imaging and Informatics startup in 2000 and held various positions of which the latest was VP & General Manager Europe. Stentor developed a technology and service delivery business models unique to the Healthcare industry.

Since the acquisition of Stentor by Royal Philips, Mr van den den Hoven has lead the International Healthcare Informatics Sales and Service organization for Philips Healthcare International.

Dr Guanyabens has dedicated his career to expanding ICT use in the Spanish healthcare system serving successively as the Director of Organizational Development and ICT at the UDIAT Diagnostic Centre and then as Secretary of Strategy and Coordination of Catalonia's Government Health Department directing health strategy on IS and ICT. In an effort to further drive local and regional healthcare ICT use, Dr Guanyabens also participates on several municipal and private committees whose influence directly impacts his cause including the Barcelona City Council, the Asil Hospital Foundation, the Catalan Information & Health Forum, HL7-Canada and IHE-Spain Association.
